From Our President:
POSITIVE! PROGRESSIVE! PREPARED!
The 2013 Convention in Panama City, hosted by Region 2 in September 2013, was the most well-attended Democratic Women’s Club of Florida, Inc. (DWCF, Inc.) Convention in recent memory. We had approximately 235 attendees, including delegates from all over the state of Florida.
The workshops, speakers, and networking were energizing. The workshops were delivered by outstanding subject matter experts on hate crimes, legislative advocacy techniques, social media, gun control, and access to healthcare for women.
Speakers for our delicious meal functions included Florida women who are running for office. They are Attorney Gwen Graham, who is running for Congress; Senator Nan Rich, who is running for the Governor of Florida; and, Jamie Shepard, who is running for District 6, Florida House of Representatives. These wonderful progressive Democratic women were joined by Allison Tant, Chair of the Florida Democratic Party; Elena McCullough, Florida Activist; Nadine Smith, Director of Equality Florida; Lori Berman, Florida House of Representative member; and our Saturday banquet keynote speaker Elizabeth Colbert Busch from South Carolina. Another major highlight of the convention was when our members had the honor to listen to, sing with, and dance with rituals lead by the Muscogee Indian Tribe of Northwest Florida.
I am extremely honored to have been elected as your state President of our Democratic Women’s Club of Florida, Inc. I remain ecstatic that Team Maureen was elected and also includes Nancy Hurlbert, 1st Vice President; Rachel Pienta, 2nd Vice President; Anna Eskamani, Secretary; and, Carol King, Treasurer. It is with great joy that I anticipate working with my sister elected officers over the next two years. Our goal is to work unceasingly to increase the number of Democratic Women’s Clubs in Florida (DWCF), to enlarge our membership across our state, and to increase the numbers of elected Democratic officials.
We have truly hit the ground running. I am writing this President’s message nine days after the election of our state officers. As we receive materials from our predecessors and transition into our roles, our team has already started working on toolkits and training for Region Chairs and Club Presidents; researching our DWCF history to share with members; creating an electronic newsletter; and, updating materials to a new website. We are also busy planning a fabulous NFDW South Region Convention in Ft. Myers for November 8 to 9, 2013. At the same time, we are busy planning our robust 2014 Board Meetings and the remarkable outstanding 2014 DWCF, Inc. Convention. We have already met to continue to update our rules, bylaws, and policies and procedures. Our Political Committee is off and running to ensure that the DWCF are substantial contributors to getting progressive women elected to office in all future elections.
Positive, Progressive, and Prepared!
With deepest appreciation and drive,
Dr. Maureen McKenna, President
Democratic Women’s Clubs of Florida, Inc.
